Committee chair: William Fleming FIChemE

A 1983 graduate in Chemical Engineering from University College Dublin, I have been proud to be a member of the IChemE since then.

The first years of my career were with Syntex (subsequently Roche) in County Clare where I was primarily involved with R&D and pilot planting of new API processes. I followed this with a four-year sojourn at the Syntex Technology Center in Boulder Colorado, where I helped develop a new continuous API process for a drug close to patent expiry. Returning to Ireland in the early nineties, and following a process engineering role at FMC, I joined Jacobs Engineering where I led the process design on fume incineration and vent collection safety projects among other process engineering and project management roles. In 1998, I was grateful for the opportunity to join a growing engineering consultancy (MW Consultants) as a director, which we developed and re-orientated further towards the process industries, prior to its takeover by Parsons in 2004.

I currently run a process safety/risk management consultancy based in Cork.
My involvement with the IChemE has included Chairperson of the Southern Irish Centre between 2000 and 2002, as well as Treasurer’s role in the All Ireland Members Group 2016-17. I believe that the IChemE has much to offer our members in Ireland in terms of its worldwide recognition as a Learned Society; its focus on engineering responsibility, especially as related to safety and environmental matters; as well as being a forum for collegiality and mutual support.

Vice Chair/Mentoring Co-Ordinator: Dr Denis Ring FIChemE

I lecture in Process Engineering in University College Cork (UCC). I hold a Certificate in Applied Chemistry and a Diploma in Chemical Technology from Cork Institute of Technology, a Degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Strathclyde and a PhD in Process & Chemical Engineering from UCC. I have extensive experience in teaching chemical engineering at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. My research is in the area of particle technology specifically with respect to the secondary pharmaceutical manufacture. I have extensive involvement with the IChemE and the wider chemical engineering community. I was the inaugural Chair of the AIMG, I am a current member of the IChemE’s Professional Formation Committee (PFF).

Meetings Co-ordinator: John O'Shea FIChemE

I graduated with BE in Chemical Engineering from University College Dublin in 1968. Having worked for several years in industry with ICI, Irish Fertilizers Industries and Jacobs Engineering, in 1994 I took up the role of head of chemical and process engineering at Cork Institute of Technology, where I remained until my retirement in 2011. During this period, I have had extensive involvement with IChemE, including the role of Honorary Registrar from 1996 to 2008.

Committee Member: Dr. Witold Kwapinski AMIChemE

I am a Lecturer in the Department of Chemical and Environmental Sciences at the University of Limerick (Ireland). I have work experience from three universities in UK, Germany and Poland and many years’ research, teaching, design, development, and modelling experience of novel and existing processes in chemical and process engineering.

My research interests are focused on second generation biomass conversion processes, and particularly on the thermo-chemical conversion of waste biomass into chemicals, and products upgrading.

Currently, I supervise 10 PhD students and several final year projects.
