Decision making is a skill like any other, proficiency is gained and maintained through practice. The Center for Operator Performance has funded several projects to develop tools that enable operators to practice decision making, with and without the use of simulators. Use of the tools from these projects at NOVA Chemical's Joffre Ethylene complex is described. This includes both decision making exercises (DMX), a low cost tool which enables operators to practice decision making, and Shadowbox, which enables operators to compare their responses to those of experts. Benefits of the tools when used in conjunction with a high fidelity simulator are described.
