An Analysis of Common Causes of Major Losses in the Onshore Oil, Gas & Petrochemical Industries

Description: A review has been carried out of 100 major losses in the onshore oil, gas and petrochemical industries over the past 20 years. The original intention of this study was to analyse common causes of major losses in a way that could be of practical use to insurance risk engineers. However, given the energy insurance industries is in a unique position in that is has experience and detailed knowledge of many industry losses that are not widely reported on in public, this study is of value to those working in the oil, gas and petrochemical industries who are looking for lessons learned opportunities to assist in their own or client risk management programmes.

Ron Jarvis is a Risk Engineer at Swiss Re, based in London. He is responsible for the management and coordination of risk engineering services primarily in support of the underwriting of oil gas and petrochemicals risks. He is the current Chairman of OPERA (Oil Petrochemical & Energy Risks Association) and represents the London Market risk engineering community on the Lloyds Market Association (LMA) Onshore Energy Panel.

Andy Goddard is a chartered Chemical Engineer working as a Risk Engineer at Talbot Underwriting Ltd based in London. Before moving into the insurance sector, his industry background was with Exxon Chemical at the Fawley site near Southampton UK. With 18 years total experience, his current role is to provide technical support to property underwriters of oil, gas and petrochemical assets. This provides exposure to the process safety management practices of operators around the world but also to property damage incidents which materialise as insurance claims.


A one-hour online session: 40 minutes' presentation + 20 minutes' Q&A.
Duration (for CPD recording purposes): up to one hour.
