About the event:
The object of this seminar is to orientate chemical engineering students on how to improve their networking and communication skills as this is going to be an essential pillar of their professional development. The presenter will give answers to questions like:
- What is networking?
- Why do it?
- What makes a good networker?
- How do I tackle a room full of strangers?
Topics to be covered will include: individual goal setting, planning and personal presentation, working a room, initiating conversations and securing effective follow ups with networking contacts. The presenter will also highlight the bad habits that can wreck your chances of making contact with the people who can really make a difference.
About the presenter:
Andy Furlong is IChemE's director of policy & communication. He joined IChemE in the role of head of external relations in 1999 after fourteen years spent in the manufacturing industry.
He graduated in applied chemistry from Brunel University in 1983 before serving for two years as the elected Student Union Vice President with responsibility for external relations. Andy contested the UK parliamentary elections in 1997 and 2001.

Andy project managed the successful 7th World Congress of Chemical Engineering in 2005 and has been closely involved in the delivery of several major IChemE initiatives including the Technical Strategy Roadmap and Jubilee initiative in 2007. He has written speeches and specialist briefings for numerous decision makers and opinion formers, including UK ministers, members of parliament, university vice chancellors, senior industrialist and HRH the Princess Royal.

Andy remains convinced that chemical engineers are pivotal to building a prosperous, cleaner, safer more sustainable society and directs his efforts to helping IChemE members around the world put this message across to a wider audience.
Andy is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, an Associate Member of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations and a nervous supporter of Chelsea football club.

Time:Arrive and sign in at 17:30. Seminar from 18:00 to 20:00

- Undergraduate students: $50 (one-off payment that will cover your membership for the duration of your undergraduate course)
- Postgraduate students: $100 (one-off payment that will cover your membership for the duration of your postgraduate course)
