Event Report - The environmental aspects of major accidents and lessons learned from recent high profile incidents

major accidents

The joint event organised through the ESIG and S&LPSIG was attended by around 40 delegates who represented a variety of different industries and sectors. The focus of the event was to present the current state of thinking of different stakeholders with respect to the definition of MATTE incidents and the environmental impacts that are associated with major accident hazards.

Feedback on the event was consistently positive and summarised well by two delegates who stated that this was an "Interesting event to understand standards on MAH" and "Very interesting and a good range of speakers from different areas". Feedback from delegates also suggested an appetite for similar events organised through both subjects groups on issues ranging from Environmental permitting and contaminated land to offshore environment and safety issues.

If you would like to review the presentations from the event they are available to ESIG members below:

# Dave Walton, Assistant Chief Fire Officer, West Midlands Fire Service and Rob Mitchell, Brigade Hazardous Materials Advisor, UK: Environmental impact of major accidents

# Amy Barnes, Client Executive, MArsh Ltd, UK: Insurance implications of environmental risk

# Dr Mike Nicholas, COMAH Technical Advisor, Environment Agency, UK: Major accidents to the environment: Lessons learnt and new development

# John Clark, Haskoning UK Limited, UK: Major accidents to the environment

Finally we are always looking for your thoughts on future events. Please feel free to contact any of the committee if you have an issue that you would like to see covered by a future ESIG seminar.
