Cavitation is a good thing!?
Traditionally, cavitation has been the bane of chemical engineers when designing and sizing pumps. But a group of civil and environmental engineers at Ohio State University are using cavitation to clean up waste water. The process is able to destroy everything from pharmaceuticals to mosquito repellent and other harmful elements that can end up in water courses. The bubbles are created by ultrasound waves and are being studied as an environmentally-friendly way to reduce harmful residue.
