A flexible, effective way of training in HAZOP Study Training for Team Members. Created in the Moodle software systems and a familiarity with written English is needed to get the full benefit plus a good spoken English is necessary for interactive sessions.

Structure
All the essential topics needed to understand the principles and practice of HAZOP study are included within the eight modules of the course. Each module covers a particular aspect, which include:

– basics and background to HAZOP study

– relationship to other hazard study methods

– application to continuous and to sequential processes

– recording HAZOP study

– essential features of leading and management of a study

– making decisions in HAZOP study

– a range of examples of increasing complexity

The time required is around 12-15 hours.

Tutoring
Each student will be assigned a tutor who has personal experience as a team member, a scribe and a leader in HAZOP studies. Many tasks are set within the course, including assignments at the end of each module that ask the student to review and comment on the material just covered. The tutor will respond to each of these with comments and suggestions. Course forums are available for students post a reply to a question and see responses from other students. There is also a collaborative “wiki” where students add a line of analysis of a HAZOP problem. At any point in the course a student may consult their tutor by email.

Course director and tutor - Brian Tyler:
From the early 1970s Brian was an organiser of safety courses, firstly for UMIST creating their series ‘safety in the chemical industry’ then extensively for the IChemE. The first course involving HAZOP was the annual Identification and assessment of hazards by HAZOP and HAZAN run between 1978-1999, with the involvement of Bert Lawley. A new series was started in 1990 HAZOP study for team leaders and team members – this course still runs, now under the direction of Phil Aspinall. Since the mid-80s many in-company courses have been delivered in over 50 different organisations for both the IChemE and S&T Consultants. Where necessary, HAZOP leadership has been provided to companies new to HAZOP study. As well as the public and in-company courses, two IChemE books have been co-authored, HAZOP: Guide to best practice and Hazard identification methods. Professional qualifications include CChem, FRSC and Associate Fellowship of the IChemE.

Case studies
A series of examples and case studies of increasing complexity show how HAZOP really works. They emphasise the importance of selecting a node, writing a design intention and searching for deviations using appropriate guideword + parameter combinations. Each study is completed with a live interactive analysis involving student(s) and tutor, aiming to give hands-on experience of the HAZOP study method in as realistic a manner as is possible in an on-line training course. A HAZOP record will be produced from each session for comparison with a full report for that node.

Organisation
Many links are provided within the course to encourage students to investigate related topics. The course has been planned to follow a linear route through the modules but students are not constrained – they can move quickly through familiar material and spend longer times elsewhere.  Additional features in the package are a glossary, a FAQ page, a blog and a personal journal. Use of these is optional.
