Gasification technology provides an attractive conversion route to fuels and chemicals from a wide range of primary energy sources. Most of the undesirable by-products created by conventional combustion processes are either eliminated, converted into saleable products, or can be captured for safe storage. Gasification 11 will take a close look at the latest developments in the field.
Today, new investment in energy conversion is complicated by the volatility of raw material availability and price, plus the need to meet tighter environmental regulation. Most challenging of all is the increasing pressure to control CO2 emissions. Gasification can be the key to overcoming these difficulties and the conference programme will demonstrate that:
- Gasification is already used in the extraction and processing of previously inaccessible tar sands and is being developed to access shale oils and deep coal measures.
- Gasification offers routes to high quality products from low grade of energy sources.
- Gasification is an important step in converting coal to substitute natural gas (SNG) and cleaner transportation fuels, including aviation fuels.
- Continued research and development is needed, both to assess data being obtained from existing gasification projects and to identify further opportunities for cost reduction, improved efficiency and scope for further process innovation.
