The potential of self-ignition of meat and bone meal stored in large stockpiles - issue 260

LPB260, April 2018, cover
Issue Date: 10/04/2018
Issue Number: 260
This paper addresses the fire and explosion hazards and the self-ignition properties of meat and bone meal (MBM). MBM had generally been used as a nutritional supplement for animals (pet food) until the bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) crisis. Nowadays it is utilised as organic fertilizer, a fossil-fuel replacement for renewable energy generation, as a fuel in cement kilns, landfilling or incineration. This paper illustrates cases where fire broke out due to self-heating of MBM in storages, identifying potential causes and covering some learning points.
