IChemE and Elsevier recognise publishing’s ‘invisible people’

IChemE and Elsevier recognised the ‘invisible people’ of peer reviewed publishing yesterday at a reception in Berlin, Germany as part of the 8th European Congress of Chemical Engineering (ECCE 8).

An audience of invited guests gathered to recognise 37 of the top reviewers on IChemE’s quartet of research journals, Chemical Engineering Research and Design, Process Safety and Environmental Protection, Food and Bioproducts Processing and Education for Chemical Engineers.

Eva Sorensen, Editor-in-chief of Chemical Engineering Research and Design and reader at University College London, UK says that the role of reviewers often come a distant third when it comes to recognition in peer reviewed publishing: “When a good paper is published, the author will receive plenty of deserved recognition in their field. The editors and editorial board also get recognition too. But the aspect of work that often appears to get forgotten is the review process – where people who give up hours of their own time to review the work of their peers.

“Without this commitment, ability and enthusiasm, the world of peer reviewed publishing would be dead.  We wanted to use this opportunity to recognise some of the people that have really gone the extra distance and helped make the IChemE journals some of the most respected in our field.

“The reviewers will also often be active authors too so they really do make the extra effort to make our journals a success,” adds Sorensen.

Earlier this year IChemE announced that its three print journals had all secured further increased Impact Factors. Chemical Engineering Research and Design, Process Safety and Environmental Protection and Food and Bioproducts Processing recorded Impact Factors of 1.519, 1.453 and 1.207 respectively.

Around 3000 chemical and process engineers are in Berlin for ECCE8. IChemE journals are also the official journals of the European Federation of Chemical Engineering (EFCE).
