IChemE supports new managers

IChemE has launched two new training courses to support chemical engineers who are new to management and leadership roles.

The New to management and Coaching for chemical engineers training courses have been developed and facilitated by Fiona Carter, an experienced consultant and coach who is also a Chartered Chemical Engineer.

New to management addresses the skills shift required when moving from the role of team member to team manager. The course focuses on the proficiency and behaviours needed to lead a team effectively; it provides a content-rich, fast paced programme, with hints and tips for delegates to use for years to come.

Carter says: “Unfortunately for many new managers, the training they receive sometimes does not recognise the fundamental changes they need to make. With guidance however, most new managers can quickly understand and start to put into practice the skills and behaviours that they need in order to succeed in their new role.” 

Coaching for chemical engineers provides a simple framework for delivering coach-based support in the workplace. Good coaching skills enable managers and others to provide timely and appropriate support and guidance to colleagues.

“Some people find that coaching comes naturally, but the majority do not; real skill is needed to help someone find their own solution to an issue they face.  This course provides a basic coaching model, and then lots of practice and feedback,” says Carter.

Carter has many years experience in the chemical and food industries in blue chip organisations and now as a coach and consultant.  She has worked in operational management roles, successfully led significant organisation change and had lead roles in major capital investments.

The new courses complement existing non technical courses already offered by IChemE including communication, appraisal and presentation skills.  These attributes are highly valued in an industry that now requires senior chemical engineering professionals to bring a balance of both technical and non-technical expertise to the role and successfully lead and communicate with team members.
