SONG stages first event in Malaysia
IChemE's Oil and Natural Gas Subject Group staged its first event in Malaysia last week.
Members and invited guests of associated institutions met in Kuala Lumpur at the Intercontinental Hotel where Johan Samad, chairman of IChemE in Malaysia, struck a gong to officially establish the group’s Malaysian activities.
An online survey of local members recently confirmed a strong demand for technical activities specifically related to the sector. The exploration and production of oil and gas is crucial to Malaysia’s expanding economy, led chiefly by the state-owned group Petronas.
Outlining plans for SONG in Malaysia, Mike Fox, development manager at Talisman Energy, said the group will provide a forum for those interested in the upstream and midstream oil and gas sectors to share knowledge, promote best practice, and help develop IChemE’s related technical policy.
IChemE members will be able to join any one of IChemE's 19 subject groups free of charge in 2012 as a new member benefit. All members will be asked to specify their group of choice on their 2012 membership renewal form.

About chemical engineers
Chemical, biochemical and process engineering is the application of science, maths and economics to the process of turning raw materials into everyday products. Professional chemical engineers design, construct and manage process operations all over the world. Pharmaceuticals, food and drink, synthetic fibres and clean drinking water are just some of the products where chemical engineering plays a central role.
