BP awarded gold corporate partner status

The Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) has awarded BP in the UK Gold Corporate Partner status in recognition of the company’s commitment to developing talent in the chemical engineering profession.

The presentation was made to BP’s group head of engineering, John Baxter, at its Technology Centre in Pangbourne, England. BP's UK operations join a select group of organisations to hold Gold Corporate Partner status, including Abu Dhabi Marine Operating Company (ADMA-OPCO), KBR and Sellafield.

Corporate Partner status is awarded to organisations in the process industries that exemplify good practice in support for and development of chemical and process engineers.

Gold status is the highest level and requires organisations to meet high standards in attracting, training, developing and recognising chemical engineering talent. Gold Corporate Partners are required to engage with schools, universities and the wider chemical engineering profession.

IChemE’s chief executive, David Brown, said: “Gold Corporate Partner status recognises BP’s major contribution in the UK to professional development in the process industries over many years.

“More IChemE members work for BP than for any other employer and the company has been a tremendous supporter both of the profession and of IChemE’s international community over the years.

“In our view, they follow some of the highest standards in the sector to attract, train, develop and make effective use of chemical and process engineering talent. We look forward to working with them for many years to come.”

John Baxter - BPBaxter, a former director of the UK’s Dounreay nuclear power plant and naval engineer, also received an Honorary Fellowship from IChemE.

Brown continued: “It’s also a great pleasure to award John his Honorary Fellowship. He has made a major contribution to engineering over many years and continues to do so in his role at BP where he has responsibility for leading the engineering profession across their entire group of companies.”

John Baxter said: “It is both an honour and a great pleasure to receive the Gold Partner status on behalf of BP. I also feel very privileged to be made an honorary fellow of IChemE.”
