Qatar welcomes IChemE past president

Russell Scott
Chemical engineers in Doha, Qatar gave a warm welcome to IChemE immediate past president, Russell Scott, this week – the first major event hosted by the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) in Qatar.

The event, sponsored by Maersk Oil Qatar (MOQ) and attended by over 30 delegates, reflects a growing interest in the region about the formation of an IChemE Member Group in Qatar.

IChemE’s immediate past president, Russell Scott, gave a presentation on IChemE’s new technical strategy - Chemical Engineering Matters. The strategy outlines ten major actions chemical engineers can take over the next five years to address challenges on issues including food, water, health and energy – a topic particularly relevant to chemical engineers in the Middle East.

IChemE’s senior ambassador for Qatar, and head of facilities development studies at MOQ, Shane Watson, said: “We have been making steady progress towards the formation of a Member Group for Qatar. This latest event, and the personal involvement from Russell Scott, has helped tremendously.

“We have received fantastic feedback from the event and it is great to see the interest and commitment being shown by IChemE to support the chemical engineering community in Qatar.”

During his visit, Russell also took the opportunity to award Shane Watson with his Fellows certificate in recognition of his status and commitment to the chemical engineering profession.

This latest development in the region follows the announcement last year that the world’s largest producer of liquefied natural gas, Qatargas, had secured IChemE accreditation of its in-company training scheme.
