Royal evening as Malaysia celebrates IChemE Awards

The Universiti Teknologi Malaysia and PETRONAS picked up some of the major awards at the inaugural Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) Awards in Malaysia this week, which were attended by royal guest of honour, HRH Raja Puan Besar of Perak Tuanku Zara Salim, D.K.S.A, D.K.A.

The IChemE Awards celebrate excellence, innovation and achievement in the chemical and process industries across the world.

It is the first time the Awards have been held in Malaysia and are set to become a permanent addition to a series of world-wide celebration events organised by IChemE each year.

In total, six awards were presented on 21 October 2013 at the Grand Millennium Hotel, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Universiti Teknologi Malaysia enjoyed a successful evening collecting two awards – the Education and Training Award and the Petrochemical Processing Award.

Global healthcare company, GlaxoSmithKline, won the Process Safety Award and two of Malaysia’s talented chemical engineers, Mohd Fauzi bin Abidin and Mohd Saiful bin Tajudin won the Innovator of the Year Award and Young Chemical Engineer of the Year Award, respectively.

Global oil and gas giant, PETRONAS, in partnership with Queen’s University Belfast (QUILL), UK, were awarded the Sustainable Technology Award. Their collaboration has resulted in new technology which removes toxic mercury from natural gas more efficiently. Their entry has also been shortlisted for the global IChemE Awards, which are being held in the UK on 7 November 2013.

Chair of judges, Dr Ir. Professor Abdul Aziz Abdul Raman, said: “Congratulations to all the winners for their success, and also the other shortlisted entries that came so close to winning a prestigious IChemE Award.

“Our first IChemE Awards have been a major success and a fitting occasion to showcase the talent here in Malaysia. They have been made extra special by the presence of royal guest of honour, HRH Raja Puan Besar of Perak Tuanku Zara Salim, D.K.S.A, D.K.A., and we extend our gracious thanks for Tuanku's support”.
