Minister to speak at oil and gas dinner

Fergus Ewing MSP

Fergus Ewing MSP, minister for business, energy and tourism, will be the guest speaker at the Institution of Chemical Engineers’ (IChemE) annual dinner in Aberdeen on 22 April 2015.

IChemE is the professional body for chemical and process engineers with over 3,500 members working in major Scottish industries including whisky, food and energy – especially oil and gas.

The dinner, which is sponsored by AspenTech, is one of Aberdeen’s major annual gatherings for chemical engineers with over 200 guests expected to attend from organisations including ABB, WorleyParsons, Peak Global Consultancy, BP, Chevron, and Amec Foster Wheeler.

With the economic debate in Scotland being dominated by the future of the oil and gas industry, IChemE is delighted that Scotland’s energy minister, Fergus Ewing MSP, will be attending the dinner.

IChemE director of policy and communication, Andy Furlong, said: “The major fall in global oil prices from US$110 a barrel in June 2014 to current levels of around US$60 has already resulted in job losses in Scotland and investment in the industry is also under threat.

“Although oil prices have increased in recent weeks there remains a great deal of uncertainty about the future. Consequently, we are honoured that the minister is taking time out of his busy schedule to speak to our members.

“It’s a dialogue we hope will continue, especially with the launch later this month of the ‘IChemE Energy Centre’ which will help provide decision-makers around the world with expert advice on energy issues.”

Other guest speakers include IChemE’s incoming president, Dr. Andrew Jamieson OBE – who has worked in the oil and gas industry for 35 years – and Ingrid Stewart, corporate development director at EnerMech, who has spent much of her career working in finance, mergers and acquisitions.

IChemE’s Aberdeen Annual Dinner is being held at the Hilton Aberdeen Treetops, Aberdeen, on 22 April 2015. To attend visit: www.icheme.org/aberdeendinner.
