Question Time at University of Malaya

question-time-2017-panelWith an attendance of 96 students from several universities, the event started with an opening speech by Prof. Ir. Dr. Kaharudin Dimyati, Deputy Dean (Undergraduate), Faculty of Engineering, University of Malaya. Prof. Kaharudin highlighted recent achievements of the Faculty of Engineering at University of Malaya, including being ranked 23rd in Electrical Engineering in the QS University Rankings by Subject and 35th in Engineering and Technology. 

The keynote session was delivered by Dr. NorAzmi Alias, Senior Vice President, Research Management of CREST. Dr. NorAzmi highlighted the importance of chemical engineers in the electrical and electronics sector, especially in materials and organic synthesis. Having graduated as a chemical engineer himself, he capped off by sharing his prior experience at the University of Rhodes Island and in corrosion science.

After a short refreshment break, an introduction speech was given by Prof. Ir. Dr. Sharifah, Chairwoman of YEG IChemE Malaysia. Prof. Sharifah introduced the Young Engineers Group (YEG) of IChemE Malaysia and urged students to register as a student member of IChemE to enjoy several benefits exclusive for members. She also introduced the next highlight of the event, a forum titled ‘The Return of the Oil and Gas Industry: When, Where and How’ involving Ms Phuah from Schlumberger, Mr Syed Faiz from PETRONAS, Mr Suresh from ExxonMobil and Mr Adli from Carigali Hess as panel speakers, while Dr. Badrul Mohamed Jan, SPE-UM SC and CEUC club adviser, as moderator. The panel discussed issues regarding the volatility of the crude oil price and the prospect of returning to a sustained equilibrium, the impact of the shale revolution, the role of OPEC, the role of Petronas in Malaysia including the new Pengerang Integrated Complex, and the impact of crude price on deep sea investment. Additional questions from the audience about employability prompted the panel to discuss the importance of a university degree and the desired qualities for new hires. The event ended on a high note with a group photo, lunch and networking session.
