Zacharof Myrto-Panagiota

Research Associate

Dr ZacharofComing originally from Greece, I initially obtained a Bachelor's degree in Biological and Biomedical Sciences from A.T.E.I. Athens, Greece in 2004. After graduation, I was employed as a Biomedical Scientist in Hippokrateion General Hospital where although enthusiastic with the post, I realised that I wanted to explore different professional avenues  and specifically involve myself with research regarding pharmaceuticals and biotechnology. In 2006, I enrolled on a Master's in Philosophy (M.Phil.) degree course offered by University of Wales, Swansea on Chemical and Biochemical Engineering, which was completed successfully on mathematical modelling of microbial kinetics. Fascinated by the subject I pursued a PhD in the same department, funded by Latsis Foundation, focusing on production of antimicrobial substances from lactic acid bacteria, which was completed on 2011.

Following a short break back to Greece, where I worked as a Further Education Lecturer in Food Microbiology and Biotechnology, I returned to Swansea University as a Research Officer focusing on Environmental Biotechnology and Bioprocess Engineering. I further developed my research outputs portfolio by publishing 14 papers in referred journals and five book chapters, participating in conferences across Europe but also teaching Biochemical Engineering Principles and supervising 14 weeks lab based research projects of undergraduates.

I am currently continuing my course as a research professional being employed in the School of Medicine offering bioprocess engineering services while teaching prospective chemical and medical engineers.

I consider Chartered engineer status as paramount to my professional development. I am currently an elected  Associate Member (AMIChemE) of the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) and undertaking all the necessary actions suggested by IChemE's Academic Assessment Panel for Chartered Member status.
