Membership

IChemE has four grades of membership, each giving you professional support and a range of services whatever level you work at within the chemical, biochemical and process profession. IChemE is licensed by Royal Charter to award the qualification Chartered Chemical Engineer.

Fellow

Achieving Fellowship of IChemE - FIChemE

As a Fellow you are an engineering professional of distinction, making significant contribution to your profession. You demonstrate technical excellence and leadership of your peers.

What experience do I need?

Achieving Fellowship is about recognition of your employment in an important position of responsibility in chemical engineering for a sufficient period:

  • An ‘important position of responsibility’ is a level very much greater than the requirement for Chartership. You will be expected to have personal responsibility for decisions involving substantial resources and their consequences.
  • A ‘sufficient period' is typically a minimum of 5 years working at this high level.
Referees

All candidates must nominate two IChemE Corporate Member referees at least one of which should be a Fellow. Your referees must be able to attest to your contribution to the profession and your professional status in the last five years.

You may also name a non-corporate member if they have information not available to your main referees. Please note, however, your application will not be more highly regarded simply because it is supported by more than two persons.

If you do not have two IChemE Corporate Member referees, this should not delay your application, contact the Membership Department who will assist you in identifying appropriate candidates.

Member

As a Member, you have achieved Chartered Chemical Engineer status and Corporate membership of IChemE. You have attained an internationally recognised and respected mark of competence and show commitment to the chemical engineering profession. Associate Member

In July 2008 we reviewed our criteria for Associate Membership.  Should you have made an enquiry/application for Associate Member before this date, under the new criteria, you may now be eligible for this grade.  Please follow the relevant link below for more information.

As an Associate Member of IChemE you are likely to be a young professional working in chemical engineering or a closely related field. You may well be working towards Chartered Engineer status.

I hold an IChemE accredited undergraduate degree

As an Affiliate, you will have an interest in chemical, biochemical or process engineering. You will wish to benefit from IChemE membership by joining our global community. You may also be working towards Chartered Chemical Engineer Status.
