Description: Designed to help managers, lead engineers and supervisors prepare for and conduct an appraisal discussion with confidence, to ensure it's a positive and enjoyable experience for all involved. This will show you how to build realistic development plans to motivate and support your staff. It will help you identify an individual's strengths and where necessary confront performance shortfall. The course is delivered by Dr Jamie Cleaver, a Chartered Engineer whose unique background allows him to to relate otherwise generic 'soft skill' training to the situations and personalities you will encounter in the process industries.

Chartered Engineers are expected to be able to lead teams and develop staff effectively, by for example carrying out appraisals and planning staff training and development needs, as laid out in the Engineering Council's UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence.

This course will help you prepare for and conduct an appraisal discussion with confidence. It will show you how to build realistic development plans to motivate and support your staff. It will help you identify an individual's strengths and where necessary confront performance shortfall.

Course director

Dr Jamie Cleaver, PhD, CEng, FIChemE
Jamie has a strong technical background, with a first degree in chemical engineering from the University of Surrey and a PhD from the University of Cambridge. After his PhD he followed a natural path into academic research and spent 16 years lecturing chemical engineering at the University of Surrey. For the past five years at Surrey he coordinated the Professional Training placement scheme for chemical engineering students. He was able to to see first hand the huge potential benefit to individuals and organisations that could be achieved by professional skills training, and identify the specific skills required. His skills training is enhanced by direct experience as an employee with BP, Cargill, Air Products and by several consultancy roles. He is currently in demand by commercial organisations and universities as a freelance trainer of soft skills and technical skills.
