Claire did a degree in Chemical Engineering at the University of Cambridge before working for Nestle in Switzerland. She then completed a PhD in catalysis for biodiesel production at the university of Newcastle upon Tyne. After that she started work at AstraZeneca at the Macclesfield site where she is currently an associate principal scientist, working on the development of processes to make new pharmaceutical compounds. She has worked in both API and formulation development with early stage processes up to larger scale commercial processes.
I want to ensure that chemical engineers have a strong voice in addressing the grand challenges facing society and that we as chemical engineers build on our skills of working with other disciplines to work in key collaborations to meet the needs of society. I would also like to see the public perception of chemical engineering move away from the heavy industry and smoke stack stereotype to see the ground breaking and vital work we do in the health and wellbeing field, in turning waste into feedstocks and in delivering a carbon neutral economy.
