IChemE past president recognised in Queen’s birthday honours list

27th June 2012

Past IChemE president, Greg Lewin and past IChemE Australian chair, Tamarapu (Tam) Sridhar have both been named in this year's Australian Queen's Birthday honours list.

Lewin served as IChemE president in 2006/07 and is currently the executive director of Sapphire Global.  Previously he was the president of Shell Global Solutions (2003-2009) after serving as executive vice president (strategy, and portfolio & environment) at Shell International (UK).

Lewin was made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in recognition of his ‘ service to the profession of chemical engineering through senior roles in the petroleum industry, to business and commerce, and to professional organisations.’

“I am exceptionally proud to see my contribution to international business recognised in Australia and delighted that chemical engineering has been profiled,” says Lewin.

'It is a strong personal conviction that economic, social and environmental challenges will only be sustainably addressed through acceptable, scientifically sound solutions shared and developed through engagement with society at large,” Lewin adds.

Sridhar is dean of engineering at Monash University and is a past IChemE Australian chair (2004/05) and IChemE Council vice president.  Sridhar received his Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) honour in recognition of his ‘distinguished service to tertiary education, particularly the discipline of chemical engineering, as an academic and administrator, and to the forging of international strategic educational relationships.’

Sridhar says “This honour has come as a big surprise and I am pleased to receive it.”

“On reflection, honours such as the Order of Australia also recognise institutional achievement. As dean and the public face of the faculty of engineering, I suspect that this award says more about the faculty than about me,” adds Sridhar.

Both Lewin and Sridhar are looking forward to attending an award ceremony with the Australian governor general later this year.
