Stability & Change: A process paradox

20th August 2012

Incoming IChemE president and chair of Great Britain’s Health and Safety Executive (HSE), Judith Hackitt, will be sharing her extensive experience of process safety management with delegates at IChemE’s fourth Regional Process Safety Seminar in Malaysia this October.

In a career spanning over 35 years Hackitt has worked at Exxon Chemicals, HSE and the European Chemical Industry Association (CEFIC), amassing a wealth of experience of process safety and the challenge of managing change brought about by the necessity of progress.  She will be delivering the keynote address at the event on 8 October at the Pulai Spring Resort in Johor.

Hackitt says:  “One of the fundamental roles of the chemical engineer is to seek continuous process improvement and optimisation – by definition this means making changes to the process – it’s important that we balance this need with the need to maintain safety standards.  This pattern of change is taking place around the world and there are valuable lessons to be shared and learned.”

The interactive seminar will feature short paper presentations and workshops. The format will enable participants to share key learning points and will be of interest to managers, supervisors, engineers, safety personnel and others involved in process management.

Delegates will also benefit from the insights of some of the region’s leading professionals and have the opportunity to network, share knowledge and generate ideas on about some of the most important debates in the field.

Additional speakers include Dr Bahman Abdolhamidzadeh from the University of Malaya, senior partner at ERM Jye Yng Voon, human factors engineering consultant Karen Jacka, whose clients include Shell, Petronas and ExxonMobile, and current head of quality, safety, health & environment for Synthomer Asia, Jayakumar Rajamoney who holds an MSc in occupational safety & health.

They will deliver papers ranging from the domino effects in process safety incidents, hazard analysis, human factors and managing change followed by workshops led by Christina Phang on topics including effective process hazards assessment, learning from past accidents, succession planning and capability development managing the change process.
