Tarmac cements commitment to chemical engineering excellence

1st September 2017

The Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) has presented leading sustainable building materials and construction business, Tarmac, with Bronze Corporate Partner status. The presentation recently took place at their flagship site in Derbyshire, UK.

The Bronze award from IChemE demonstrates a clear commitment by Tarmac Cement and Lime to advance the profession through various activities.

Tunstead in Derbyshire is home to one of Tarmac’s major processing sites, and employs 400 people. Across the UK, Tarmac employs roughly 7000 people, spread across 400 sites nationwide.

The combined operation at Tunstead is one of the largest in the UK, and the site is the largest supplier of lime and lime-based products in the UK. A new Cement Plant was built in 2004, producing materials that are shipped across the country by tanker, rail or in packed bags.

A successful IChemE Accredited Company Training Scheme (ACTS) currently runs out of the site, and has five graduates enrolled across the business. The scheme provides engineers with practical skills training relevant to their roles at Tarmac, and puts steps in place in order for them to achieve Chartered Chemical Engineer status.

Tarmac places significant importance on Continuous Professional Development (CPD), an essential commitment for IChemE’s Corporate Partners. CPD support is offered to Tarmac employees at all levels, and has seen employees supported and funded to achieve degree level qualifications alongside their jobs.

IChemE’s Past President, Jonathan Seville presented Bronze Corporate Partner status to Tarmac’s Managing Director of Cement and Lime, Mike Eberlin at a small ceremony in Tunstead, UK.

Jonathan Seville said:

“I’m delighted to present Bronze Corporate Partner to Tarmac. Their chemical engineers play an important role in processing some of the world’s most in-demand materials, used to build the homes, offices, and recreational places we take for granted.

“What struck me most during IChemE’s visit; was that Tarmac provides their employees with a real breadth of opportunities to become better engineers. Project management is a key focus of their ACTS delivery, an essential skill for any chemical engineer who wants to progress to a senior role. It’s really great to see such an investment in young talent.”

Mike Eberlin said:

“We’re delighted to accept this status and absolutely recognise importance of working with organisations with a focus on STEM subjects. We strive across the whole of our business to provide training and development opportunities for our employees, and this is a fantastic opportunity to take this practice a step further with official recognition.”
