University of Hull receives accreditation for outstanding chemical engineering course

The University of Hull has received international accreditation from the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE), for its Bachelors and Masters degree programmes in chemical engineering. Accreditation from IChemE recognises best practice in university education, and provides evidence of meeting the Knowledge and understanding component for Incorporated or Chartered Chemical Engineer status.
Hull is one of the UK’s oldest universities; however its chemical engineering course has only been running since 2012. IChemE university assessors, trained volunteers working as chemical engineers in industry or academia, visited Hull in June – and had high praise for the standard of teaching.
The accreditation report highlighted a clear commitment to instilling a culture of safety, good links with industry, and use of teaching staff with industrial experience to supervise design projects as key examples of good practice.
The University of Hull had been given recognition previously for their strong support of students, and over 96% of Hull graduates go on to work or further study within six months. The Hull Employability Awards have also been created within the university, to encourage students to develop and demonstrate their soft skills.
IChemE’s Chair of the Education Accreditation Forum, Rob Best, said:
“The University of Hull has established excellent chemical engineering degree courses. I’m delighted to announce that not only have they received accreditation on these programmes for the next three years, but we have also backdated accreditation to 2012. This means that Hull graduates from the MEng course in chemical engineering from 2016 to 2023 will have fully met the academic requirements for Chartered Chemical Engineer status. Those graduating from the BEng from 2015 to 2022 will have fully met the academic requirements for Incorporated Engineer.”
University of Hull’s Head of Chemical Engineering, Professor Philip Rubini, said:
“I’m delighted to receive accreditation from IChemE for our chemical engineering degree courses at all levels. We received a glowing report, which is an incredible validation of our hard work - developing course materials, connecting with industry, and ensuring we provide our students with the right skills to succeed as chemical engineers - whilst studying with us and beyond.”
