"Gave me a good understanding of process safety and why and when to use different evaluation methods."

IChemE's flagship process safety training course is essential for anyone involved in the design, modification, operation and maintenance of a major hazard or process plant.

All process safety fundamentals are covered and participants will emerge with a better understanding of the key principles of process safety and its management.

The courses references the IChemE Safety Centre's management framework built on six functional areas or pillars:

  • knowledge and competence
  • engineering and design
  • systems and procedures
  • assurance
  • human factors
  • culture.

The course combines workshops, case studies and theory to teach core areas of a process safety framework.

Participants who pass an end-of-course assessment receive an IChemE Pass Certificate in the Fundamentals of Process Safety.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, participants will understand:

  • the key principles of process safety and its management
  • the human, environmental and business consequences of poor process safety
  • the key factors influencing the basis of process safety
  • the hazards associated with a process plant and how the risks can be controlled
  • the key process safety requirements at each stage in the life cycle of a process plant from conceptual design through to operation, maintenance and modification
  • the interdependence of and the need for overall organisation process safety management capability

Course presenters

Our expert trainers have worked in many industries including oil and gas, offshore, refining, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, food processing, utilities, gas distribution, energy, power generation and in some case with government regulators. Face-to-face courses are typically delivered by two trainers with a broad range of process industry experience.

Previous delegates say

100% of UK delegates in 2019 had their learning objectives met and said they would recommend the course to colleagues due to the:

  • breadth and depth of the material covered
  • well-structured and well-presented content
  • enthusiasm of the presenters
  • good use of case studies, videos and group exercises to break-up and supplement the PowerPoint presentations
  • right balance between theory and practice and the focus on real-life issues
  • engaging presenters with real-world experience of applying the course content
  • opportunity to meet and learn from other professionals in different roles/industries
  • opportunity to gain a broad understanding of the topics of the process safety framework and how they fit together, and the context in which certain tools are useful
  • opportunity to make improvements back at the workplace
  • significant effort to involve examples from all industries and not just traditional oil and gas.

"Gave me a good understanding of process safety and why and when to use different evaluation methods."
Kate McFarlane, Johnson Matthey, UK

"The group exercises were well thought out to encourage discussion – this was interesting because of the range of industries and experience represented in each group. The exercises showed how to put the theory into practice."
Stephen McLachlan, TGE Gas Engineering, UK

"The course leaders were very knowledgeable and were good at relating the topics to the attendees' experience."
Stephen Florence, Recycling Technologies, UK
