IChemE's flagship process safety training course is essential for anyone involved in the design, modification, operation and maintenance of a major hazard or process plant. All process safety fundamentals are covered and participants will emerge with a better understanding of the key principles of process safety and its management.

This course references the IChemE Safety Centre's management framework built on six functional areas or pillars:

  • knowledge and competence
  • engineering and design
  • systems and procedures
  • assurance
  • human factors
  • culture.

The course combines workshops, case studies and theory to teach core areas of a process safety framework. Participants who pass an end-of-course assessment receive an IChemE Pass Certificate in the Fundamentals of Process Safety.

IChemE continues to monitor local government guidelines regarding COVID-19. The Institution will require that trainers and training venues adhere to additional safety and distancing requirements. All delegates will also be required to adhere to these requirements and further communication on this matter will be issued to attendees closer to the course.

Whilst our usual cancellation terms and conditions apply, delegates can transfer to a later face-to-face course date or an online iteration of the same course at any stage, without incurring a cancellation fee.

In the event of IChemE being unable to deliver the training course as planned, a full refund will be provided.

Andrew Woodhams is a Fellow of IChemE, who has worked in hydrocarbon related activities for more than twenty five years. He was introduced to process safety at Loughborough University and it has been a central component of all of his work.

During his 17 years at BP, following Texas City, he volunteered to take on safety accountabilities to promote process safety knowledge in Australia’s upstream business. After leaving BP in 2014, he has continued to promote process safety initiatives through APPEA and the IChemE Safety Centre, contributing to a number of recent publications.

Steve Fogarty is a chemical engineer with nearly twenty five years’ experience as a process safety leader, engineering and operational manager leading teams across operational sites, operations company’s and green field/brown field projects in mineral processing, oil and gas and other chemical sectors. Steve has also completed an MBA (Technology Management) and holds a qualification as a Certified Functional Safety Expert (CFSE).

Steve has extensive exposure to process safety and HAZOP studies within operational sites, and has been responsible for operation, design and technical governance within greenfield facilities. Steve has developed a technically robust and understandable process safety framework for operating company, including HAZOP, LOPA and safety critical element performance standards.

Steve is a founding board member of the IChemE Safety Centre and project sponsor for the IChemE guidelines on Lead Process Safety Metric’s. He has presented extensively at technical and operational safety forums domestically and internationally. Steve joined AMOG consulting a year ago and has been working on developing safety in design deliverables for various clients.
