Overview

This engaging course covers all the fundamental concepts and operation of renewable energy generation systems that may be used in energy transition scenarios to achieve net zero targets.

Topics include: introduction to renewable energy, hydro power, wind power (onshore and offshore), solar power (PV and CSP), bio-energy (biomass), alternative transportation energy storage technologies (batteries and hydrogen), geothermal energy, marine energy (tidal and wave) and carbon capture and storage (CCS). Five days classroom equivalent.

"An excellent description of good practices. Very clear structure in “bite-sized” modules. Excellent materials. Trainer appears very knowledgeable and competent. An excellent course with good technical content."

Learning outcomes

On completion of this course you will be able to:

  • describe the principles of Energy Transition scenarios, their objectives and impact on electricity generation over the next 30 years
  • explain the key concepts of net zero targets, capacity (load) factors and the levelised cost of energy
  • list the main types and characteristics of renewable energy sources and their advantages and disadvantages
  • explain the design, performance and operation of wind turbines and the key issues involved in wind farm development (onshore and offshore)
  • describe the principles of the design and operation of solar PV systems and how they are affected by solar irradiance and temperature
  • identify the key issues involved in energy storage and how developments in batteries and hydrogen technologies can be applied as an alternative energy source for transportation
  • describe the concepts and primary techniques involved in carbon capture and storage and the key barriers to implementation.
