This webinar is intended for those contemplating, or just starting out, in consultancy in an international context, as well as those with more experience in this field.

The webinar assumes that you, the consultant, are happy with the work you are to carry out and the fee proposed. It is intended to look at all the other matters which the consultant needs to consider when taking on and carrying out work internationally. Amongst the topics to be considered are:

  • defining the scope of the work
  • changes to scope
  • liability
  • insurance
  • payment
  • intellectual property issues
  • programme
  • local law and regulatory issues
  • anti-bribery legislation

The intention is that those contemplating, or in the early stages of, a consultancy career will gain a clearer idea of the issues which they must bear in mind when undertaking work. More experienced consultants will be able to review their current practice and decide whether it should be amended.

Roger Button qualified as a solicitor in 1971. Since then, he has specialised in providing legal support to those concerned in construction and engineering projects – both in the UK and internationally. He has acted for all participants in the construction process – including numerous consultants.

He is currently a partner in an English law firm as well as a consultant to a number of overseas consultancy organisations. He thus acts as an international consultant himself as well as advising others in the field.

Roger is a member of the Society of Construction Arbitrators, a registered Adjudicator, a registered arbitrator at the Qatar International Centre of Arbitration and a member of IChemE's Contracts Committee.

Tom Pemberton qualified as a solicitor in 1995. Since then, he has had a wide-ranging practice advising consultants and other participants in construction and engineering projects in the UK and internationally. He is currently a partner at Beale and Company, which is particularly well known for advising consultants both in contentious and non-contentious work.

Beale and Company have an established presence in Dubai and Tom works closely with Beale's Partner in Dubai. The legal directory The Legal 500 states that "Team head Tom Pemberton has 'a good appreciation' of international business".

Tom is a member of the Adjudication Society and Society of Construction Law. He sits on the ACE Commercial and Legal Group and the CIC Liability Panel whose remits are to keep their respective memberships (mainly consisting of construction professionals) informed of legal developments and to provide recommendations for best practice.
