The offshore oil and gas industry has an enviable reputation for introducing innovative technologies and techniques resulting in many production assets being extended beyond their original design life.
However, a growing number of facilities are now reaching the end of their economic lives, leading to a significant portfolio of decommissioning activity over the coming decades. Many of these decommissioning projects will be the first to be undertaken by their respective operators. Detailed decommissioning plans have to be prepared in advance by each operator, calling for robust and detailed research into design options, environmental impact assessments, societal considerations, removal strategies, risk identification and mitigation, asset integrity and inspections, hazardous waste inventories, technical and safety management, and many other challenging aspects.
Brian Nixon outlines the various challenges and opportunities faced by the sector and highlights some of the industry initiatives being led by Decom North Sea to develop models and improve efficiency across this nascent market.
