The topic

Mercury, while present in some oil and gas fields around the world, more frequently occurs in South East Asia. Mercury presents serious health and safety concerns for workers on offshore platforms. Preventing workers' exposure to mercury requires development of extensive procedures and mercury awareness training. Also product pricing can be severely discounted and wells shut-in due to high mercury levels. A case history will be presented of how Talisman Malaysia responded to mercury from ‘understanding the problem’ and development of safe operating procedures through design and installation of mercury removal facilities. The speaker’s opinion is that whenever technically feasible, mercury should be removed from produced fluids as far upstream as practical.

The speaker

Gary Towsley is a member of Professional Engineers, Geologists and Geophysicists of Alberta (APEGGA) and SPE. In his 30 years of upstream oil and gas experience he has worked in Canada, UKCS, Middle East, Africa and South East Asia. Over the past four years he has been the Talisman Malaysia Project Manager for the installation of Mercury Removal Units on two production platforms located in Peninsular Malaysia. His specialty is the specification, design and installation of ‘brownfield’ oil and gas production facilities.
