The past decade has seen strong interest in both geological sequestration and the application of CO2 EOR offshore. There is good public information on the former, but discussions on the latter have been scarce. Furthermore, many of the practices for onshore CO2 EOR facilities may not be appropriate to offshore operations.

First and foremost, implementing CO2 flood projects on existing conventional developments requires the facilities personnel to understand the impact of the change in field chemistry on the operating envelope of the surface facilities. Designing CO2 EOR for offshore developments requires further the recognition of the step changes arising from the inherent differences beneath the ground to the engineering practices on the surface. Careful considerations by competent personnel can successfully and safely take CO2 EOR into the offshore environment.

Zairin Faizal is a consultant and principal engineer with Granherne Ltd, a subsidiary of KBR. Zairin has eight years of experience in the upstream industry and has previously worked as a process and facilities engineer with engineering design firms and oil operator. He has a Masters degree in engineering from the University of Nottingham; he is a chartered engineer and a member of the Institution of Chemical Engineers and Society of Petroleum Engineers.
