LNG/FLNG compressors consume vast amounts of power for refrigeration duties. For land based LNG projects, compressor efficiency was not important since the power was supplied by large scale power generation gas turbines without any apparent limit on power; it could be delivered by a combination of gas turbines with power ratings from 43 MW to 84 MW right up to 120 MW. Helper motors were added to provide any shortfall in power during start up or normal operations.

With FLNG, focus has shifted to aero-derivative engines, which are light weight, compact and more efficient than engines used hitherto. However, aero-engines are available with a limited power range. Process designers have to invent ways to optimise compressor performance and reduce power to make best available use of aero-engines. To demonstrate the point, Dr Akhtar will present a case study –Innovative process design helps improve compressor performance.

The presenter

Dr Sib Akhtar is the Technical Director and founder of MSE Consultants. He has spent some 25 years working on the design, application and testing of gas compressors and turbines for oil and gas applications, initially with manufacturers Elliott and GEC and later with contractors. He was Principal Engineer with MW Kellogg and Chief Engineer at Global Engineering before setting up MSE consultants in 1988.

MSE is an independent consultancy which specialises in design, selection and optimisation of gas compressors, pump and machinery systems for oil, gas and LNG/FLNG production systems. MSE has extensive expertise of redesign and debottlenecking existing plant and machinery systems.
