Date From: 24 June 2013
Location: Malaysia
Description: IChemE Oil & Natural Gas Special Interest Group evening meeting in Kuala Lumpur, with presentation by Andy Nelson (MMI Engineering).
Event Type: Special Interest Groups
Venue: University of Nottingham Teaching Centre, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

An evening event with technical presentation by Andy Nelson (MMI  Engineering), and time for networking over refreshments. Registration from 18:00; the event will commence at 18:30 and close at 20:30.

This event is open to all. To encourage more participants and members, the Oil & Natural Gas Special Interest Group (SONG) will waive the attendance fee for non-members of the group. Bring along colleagues working in the upstream oil and gas industry in Malaysia, and introduce them to SONG and to IChemE.

Advance booking is essential. Registration form >>

The presentation will provide a brief introduction to explosions and the modelling of their physical effects. It will then cover the data generated by a modelling exercise to design structures and systems as mitigation measures. The latter element is aimed at a non-structural audience and outlines the basic concepts that would be useful for risk and safety practitioners so that they can understand how the results of hazard modelling are actually used.

The presentation will be made by Andy Nelson. Andy is a Chartered Engineer with over 17 years’ experience in the areas of technical safety engineering and risk management. His main area of work is in the hazardous industries, and in particular upstream and downstream oil and gas. Andy has co-developed MMI Engineering’s major hazards assessment capability and supported the development of MMI’s major hazards engineering team. Andy’s primary areas of interest are in quantifying the effects of fires and explosions and developing risk mitigation schemes that enable the case for safety to be made. He also has extensive experience in the application of safety and risk engineering techniques that include the preparation of detailed blast and fire studies, QRAs, chairing HAZOPs, HAZIDs and contributing to SIL assessment workshops, Fault and Event Tree Analysis, FMEA, SIL assessments, LOPA etc. Andy is a Principal Consultant with MMI Engineering. He heads MMI’s Perth Office, which specializes in providing consultancy services to the Oil and Industry in Australia and SE Asia.

The event will take place at the University of Nottingham Teaching Centre, Level 2, Chulan Tower, No 3 Jalan Conlay, 50450 Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Map and directions >>
