Malaysia has numerous oil fields that remain undeveloped because they are too small to be economically viable if developed in isolation using conventional approaches. Monetisation of these remaining oil reserves requires a mind-set change to development by all parties; Petronas, PSCs, RSCs and industry service and product providers. More than ever it is imperative that multidiscipline alignment is achieved at the earliest possible stage of the project to establish clear business objectives and a robust field development plan. The field development plan should capture the maximum value through innovation whilst managing the significant downside reserves risk. Innovation includes technical, commercial, operational and strategic elements. This presentation considers the “building blocks” of a small oil field development and presents options that may meet the business objectives. Conventional approaches and concepts are challenged.

Alan has thirty five years broad experience in the oil and gas industry covering all areas of facilities design and operations with significant interfaces with exploration, reservoir management, operations joint venture management and commercial arenas. His specialty is oil and gas field development, both large and small, with involvement from assessment through to implementation phases. Alan’s career includes a posting to Malaysia from 2001 to 2008 when he managed a process consulting company. Alan returned to the Malaysian oil and gas industry in October 2013 and he recently assumed the role of General Manager - Malaysia for Peritus International. Peritus International is a global consultancy providing high end system engineering services to the oil and gas industry with a focus on challenging environments.
