Topic

The continued development of new drilling and production technologies have allowed operating companies to extend the productive life of many reservoirs resulting in substantial increased value of their offshore facilities. Many of these cases result in extended facility lives well beyond that which was planned during original construction. The continued safe use of the facility may require an assessment of the structure with an examination of any damage or degradation that may have occurred (e.g., corrosion, fatigue, overload), changes to the use of the facility (e.g., added riser and conductors) and changes in the environmental criteria (e.g., storm intensity) that have developed since the platform was originally installed.

This presentation will review the history and current state of the art practice of structural integrity management as it applies to older offshore platforms. It will include specific case studies of prior structural assessment studies that have address each of these problems along with the mitigation schemes that were used when the overall performance of the structure fell below minimum accepted levels.

Speaker

Dan Dolan is a Principal at MMI Engineering and manages their operation in Oakland California. MMI is a consulting firm that provides structural engineering, risk assessment and ocean engineering services within a wider range of services; specifically for the upstream oil and gas industry. Prior to joining MMI, Dan was a Vice President at Bechtel in charge front-end engineering for their offshore oil and gas business. Dan has practiced structural engineering for 30 years where most of his work has focused on the design and assessment of offshore platforms, conceptual development and front-end engineering projects. Dan has participated in several API committees and Joint Industry Projects that have developed new standards, technologies and practices for the continued and safe operation of offshore platforms, specifically in harsh and demanding environments.
