Rapidly acquiring information and communicating risk are both perennial challenges for engineers. Even more of a challenge is that the public’s awareness and expectations are ever higher, as is their ability to inquire inside the site boundary. Given this environment, it is perhaps surprising that risk and safety assessment has not adapted its 'workspace' for risk communication and that there are no solutions based on software such as Google Earth (GE).

Google Earth illustrationThis presentation describes and illustrates the benefits to companies of both developing new software and adding the ability to post-process results of existing software so that they are visible in GE. The talk includes the potential of the piping and layout discipline, whose software already has this ability.

Such developments will significantly change how we work. The presentation will anticipate how risk and safety assessment may evolve, and will cover the real and perceived limitations, both technical and commercial, that may yet hinder exploitation of this capability.

John Evans has 30 years’ experience in the assessment of risk and safety. He has developed software for consequence, risk and reliability and has applied them to onshore and offshore projects and to portfolio management for insurers. He is a committee member of OPERA, the London insurance engineers’ forum and also of Friends of Imperial College, who organise science and technology lectures.
