Alan Munn from MMI Engineering has been involved with safety and environmental issues in the downstream oil and chemicals industry for more than 30 years. This period covers a time when HAZOPs were generally unknown to much of industry to the current time when the use of HAZOPs and other similar hazard identification techniques are in widespread use. Based on his experience, Alan will attempt to answer the following questions:

  • Are HAZOPs generally done well or is there room for improvement?
  • Have HAZOPs become a ‘tick-box’ exercise and have we forgotten why we are doing HAZOPs?
  • How has the HAZOP technique changed over the years are what future changes can we expect?
  • Has 30 years of doing HAZOPs made the world a safer place?

Alan Munn of MMI Engineering is a Chemical Engineer, a Fellow of the Institution of Chemical Engineers, a Chartered Chemical Engineer, and a Chartered Environmentalist with over 30 years of experience in refining and Process Safety Consulting. Although he graduated in England, for many years Alan was based in South Africa at a refinery in Durban and was involved with Process Engineering, Process design, Projects, Operations, Environmental Management and Sustainable Development. Since leaving South Africa in about 2008 Alan has been based in the UK and has more recently joined MMI Engineering in KL.
