A joint evening meeting of the Oil & Natural Gas Special Interest Group and the Heat Transfer Society, with a presentation by Dr Hans U. Zettler, Vice President, HTRI.

Fouling is a major problem in process plant and heat exchanger design and operation. In order to compensate for fouling the heat transfer area is often increased by 10 to 200%. The resultant overall added cost for industry exceeds several billion US$ pa.

Hans will examine the problem of fouling in process plant and heat exchanger design and operation. New methods used by HTRI to predict crude oil and cooling water fouling will be presented that can help engineers reduce plant downtime and energy costs, increase output, plan maintenance activities, and ensure safe operations. Discussion items include:

  • The future of HTRI fouling research programs and academic collaborations
  • State-of-the-art fouling tests performed at HTRI
  • EdgeviewTM, a new data-driven performance analysis service from HTRI

Presenter: Dr Hans U. Zettler

Vice President, Sales – EMEA, joined HTRI while completing his PhD in Chemical Engineering at the University of Surrey, UK. His doctoral work focused on fouling and design of compact heat exchangers. He also possesses a mechanical engineering degree (Dipl.-Ing.) from the Technical University Karlsruhe, Germany. Zettler completed multiple internships in industry throughout Europe while pursuing his education. He is a member of the German Engineering Society (VDI), a member of the VDI-GVC Working Party on Heat and Mass Transfer, an associate member of the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE), and a committee member of the Heat Transfer Society, United Kingdom.
