Topic

The presence of sands and solids in the wellhead production lines are likely to cause erosion and blockage issues in all the subsequent downstream equipment at oil & gas production platforms. As a consequence, dangerous incidents, such as flowline failures, production vessel failures and control valve failures, have a higher risk of occurring. Moreover, oil-coated sands discharged back into the sea is also an environmental concern.

This talk aims to highlight and discuss the technologies for the removal and cleaning of the sands and solids prior to discharge. Proven sand removal technologies, such as wellhead desanders, produced water desanding hydrocyclones, sand fluidisers, and sand cleaning systems are commonly used in the upstream oil & gas production platform. However, these sand removal and cleaning systems need to be designed and operated correctly to ensure optimised separation performance.

Speaker

Ir. Dr. John Eow is a chartered chemical engineer and MIChemE. He is also a Professional Engineer with a Practicing Certificate, registered with the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM).

He obtained his PhD (in electrostatic water-oil separation) from the UK, and is presently a general manager with EDES Technology Sdn Bhd, a Malaysian technology, engineering and EPCC company with businesses in the oil & gas industry.

Having spent many years in multinational companies, and having worked in the UK, Singapore, Japan and Malaysia, John has worked and learned under a number of gurus in the oil & gas industry. John is well-versed in the oil & gas processes and production technologies, such as produced water treatment, sand separation & management, crude oil treatment, and gas processing for the upstream oil & gas Industry. He also has the opportunity in working from proposal stage to commissioning stage to production troubleshooting for projects in the oil & gas industry.
