Data is everywhere. Companies in every sector are talking about Big Data. Supermarkets, delivery companies, government departments and start-ups are using data to do things that were previously considered impossible. Data is being used to recommend movies, to prevent accidents, to drive cars, to teach robots, and to transform the way in which businesses operate.

This talk will de-mystify the main concepts around big data and data analytics. Using examples from a range of industries, Justin will explore how companies are using data to save costs, change their method of working, and to innovate products for the future.

We will also look at how big data is forcing change in society, and consider some of the changes in computer technology required to support big data projects.

Presenter: Justin Watkins is a technical instructor with Think Big Analytics, a Teradata company. He has an honours degree in mechanical engineering degree from Surrey. He has spent his career helping engineers of various disciplines to use software tools for their work. He previously worked for DNV, training customers in the petro-chemical industry to use engineering modelling software for risk assessment and design.
