Reducing Process Plant Costs

Date From: 10 October 2017
Location: England
Description: A presentation showing how it is possible with mathematics based modelling to emulate the work of an engineering team.
Event Type: Special Interest Groups
Venue: IChemE HQ, One Portland Place, London, W1B 1PN

Time: 17:00

Presented by Peter Kauders of CDE Projects Limited, this presentation shows how it is possible with mathematics based modelling to emulate the work of an engineering team.  The equipment and materials needed for a process unit can be modelled with an accuracy typically only achieved in a year’s conceptual engineering but at a fraction of the time and cost.  The results challenge conventional wisdom on basic concepts behind process plant cost estimating, such as the use of cost exponents and Lang factors, how quickly and realistically design alternatives can be evaluated, and even the order in which design changes have to be undertaken.

Some results will be presented of studies on refinery and gas treating process units, and the potential impact of Conceptual Design Emulation upon project costs and economics will be discussed.

Peter read Natural Sciences and Chemical Engineering at Cambridge and worked in the UK chemical industry for five years before embarking on a career in engineering and construction.  He has worked for Stone & Webster, Matthew Hall, McDermott and Bechtel, where he was Chief Process Engineer leading work on gas processing projects in the Middle East, Russia and Kazakhstan.  In 2012 he founded an R&D company, CDE Consultants Limited, with the aim of developing Conceptual Design Emulation, a program which uses mathematics and logic to mimic the steps taken by an engineering team in process plant design.  An article about CDE was published in The Chemical Engineer in 2014.  CDE Projects Limited markets the program.

Entry is free but non SONG members must register their attendance in advance by email to song@ichememember.org

Refreshments and networking from 5.30pm, the presentation will start at 6.00pm.  There will be an opportunity for more networking after the presentation.
