Update on SONG in Malaysia

Oil platform

IChemE's Oil & Natural Gas Special Interest Group (SONG) continues its progress in establishing a regular programme of events for its Malaysian members.

The group's latest meeting was held on Monday 19 March at a new venue — The University of Nottingham Teaching Centre in Kuala Lumpur. Thank you to the University for allowing use of their excellent facilities.

The topic for this meeting was ‘A Novel Separation System for Slug and Sand Handling, Separator with Integral Polishing Scrubber’ (SWIPS for short).  Shahrul Azman Zainal Abidin CEng FIChemE, of PETRONAS GTS, presented design and field trials of a proprietary separator system jointly developed by PETRONAS and NGLTech now operational on an FPSO offshore Vietnam. It was a very interesting presentation with numerous questions from the floor and further insight supplied by Arul Jothy of NGLTech, the co-developer.

The next meeting will held at the same venue on Monday 16 April when the topic will be 'High Recovery Crude and Condensate Stabilization Process' presented by Arul Jothy FIChemE, of NGLTech.

The meeting programme for later in 2012 and through 2013 is now being planned, and suggestions for presentations are invited. Topics can be research, design or operational and cover any aspect of process engineering in the upstream and mid stream oil and gas industry. The aim is to share experience and stimulate conversation within the chemical engineers working in the oil and gas sector in Malaysia. Please contact Mike Fox, leader of SONG activities in Malaysia, with proposals.
