IChemE Chief to lead new engineering panel

DavidBrown

IChemE Chief Executive, David Brown has been elected to Chair the UK Engineering Technology Board’s (ETB) new Professional Panel.

The panel is composed of the Chief Executives of the 36 UK professional engineering institutions and its purpose is to advise the ETB on issues relevant to the development of the engineering profession.

The panel will also provide the Institutions with a forum in which to debate and implement matters of common interest and benefit to the profession and society at large.

Louise Kingham, Chief Executive of the Energy Institute, has been elected deputy chair of the panel.

Brown says: “I believe the appointments reflect the strong part that chemical and energy engineering plays in the wider success of engineering in the UK, and in showing how careers in engineering are attractive, worthwhile and enjoyable - as well as offering good financial rewards."

Brown and Kingham will also replace ETB Board Members Stephen Matthews and Keith Read when they come to the end of their tenure in June, subject to ratification at the ETB’s AGM.

In particular, the Professional Panel will:

advise the ETB on matters related to the Profession

provide insight, advice and future strategic options to the ETB on the development of the profession and the delivery of policy advice to Government

act as ambassadors and advocates on behalf of the ETB within the profession and to the wider national and international community

support the activities and receive relevant updates and reports on ETB projects

help access potential partnership funding and/ or support for relevant future ETB activity

provide an Institutional forum for information exchange and the promotion of good practice

discuss pan-engineering issues of joint concern and where appropriate provide a focus for promotion and the dissemination of a collective view

provide a platform for organisations and individuals to present topics of common interest

identify and implement opportunities for co-operation between Institutions for mutual benefit and the public good

Sir Anthony Cleaver, Chairman of the ETB, said: “The ETB is delighted to welcome David Brown and Louise Kingham as Chair and Vice Chair of our new Professional Panel. I look forward to working with them both to ensure the best possible promotion and advocacy on behalf of the engineering profession. I have no doubt that, under their leadership, the Professional Panel will come up with some excellent ideas for working together to improve the supply and perception of engineers and engineering. “

About chemical engineers

Chemical, biochemical and process engineering is the application of science, maths and economics to the process of turning raw materials into everyday products. Professional chemical engineers design, construct and manage process operations all over the world. Pharmaceuticals, food and drink, synthetic fibres and clean drinking water are just some of the products where chemical engineering plays a central role.

About IChemE

IChemE (Institution of Chemical Engineers) is the hub for chemical, biochemical and process engineering professionals worldwide. With a growing global membership of some 30,000, the Institution is at the heart of the process community, promoting competence and a commitment to best practice, advancing the discipline for the benefit of society, encouraging young people in science and engineering and supporting the professional development of its members.
