Chemical engineering student awarded inaugural Fellowship post

Iwan Roberts

Iwan Roberts, an IChemE member and Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) Engineering Doctoral  student has been named as the first recipient   of the Ashok Kumar memorial fellowship, a 3 month parliamentary fellowship with the Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology (POST) in memory of the late UK Labour Party MP.

Roberts will spend three months at POST where he will work on a chemical engineering project or research paper. He holds a first class MEng degree in biochemical engineering from University College London and is currently in the second year of his engineering doctoral.

POST is the UK Parliament's in-house source of independent, balanced and accessible analysis of public policy issues related to science and technology. POST informs parliamentary debate through a series of written and oral briefings on topical issues.

Roberts was the only graduate from his department to appear on the Deans List which recognises outstanding academic excellence. He also received the Kitson Prize which is awarded to the highest scoring graduates in years 3 and 4. Roberts is also co-president of the Beaker Postgraduate Society and a member of the London Regenerative Medicine Network.

Kumar died suddenly in March and was the only chemical engineer serving in government at the time of his death.  Kumar had earlier worked as a research scientist for British Steel. Kumar was an IChemE member and an ardent supporter of the process industries.

The post will be jointly funded by IChemE and the North East of England Process Industry Cluster (NEPIC).

IChemE Chief Executive David Brown said: “This is a fitting tribute and I know that Ashok would have approved. It will help to improve political understanding of the value of engineering and vice versa. We were very impressed with the quality of the applications we received for the post and I’m sure that Iwan will be a worthy candidate.

More information about the fellowship and application details can be found at www.icheme.org/akf.
