IChemE revamps Affiliate membership offer

IChemE Council has approved plans to overhaul IChemE’s Affiliate membership grade to better recognise the diversity of members currently grouped as Affiliate members.

The new proposals see two new membership grades introduced: Associate Fellow and Technician member will sit alongside the existing Affiliate Member and Student Member affiliate grades. The changes follow a review of IChemE’s membership services by the Institution’s vice-president of qualifications, David Shallcross.

IChemE qualifications director Neil Atkinson said: “The previous affiliate member grade was offered primarily to members without a formal chemical engineering qualification. This included students through to very senior members of industry, perhaps managers of non chemical engineering background in major process companies.  This was no longer fully appropriate.

“The new Associate Fellow grade helps us recognise senior members of industry that work with chemical engineers, or have major roles of responsibility in industry and have a natural interest in the process industries,” said Atkinson.

Associate Fellow membership is now available and is applicable to senior professionals likely to have achieved Fellow status in another professional institution.

The Technician member grade is designed for technicians working in the process industries qualified through apprenticeships or vocational qualification.  Atkinson said: “Engineering technicians play a key role in the chemical and process industries all over the world and we want to recognise that.

"By introducing these new grades of membership we now better cover all aspects of the industry and we’ll be enhancing our range of services, products and training accordingly to ensure all of our members are catered for.”
