IChemE announce Malaysia Awards 2016 finalists

Malaysia Awards 2016

The Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) has officially announced the finalists for the IChemE Malaysia Awards 2016. Over thirty entries have made it to the final stages of the Awards, and an overall winner from each category will be revealed on 24 October 2016.

The IChemE Malaysia Awards celebrate excellence, innovation and achievement in the chemical, process and biochemical industries. The national oil company for Malaysia, PETRONAS, walked away with three trophies at last year’s ceremony, and four runner-up mentions.

The Awards attracted over 100 entries this year, and finalists include Asean Bintulu Fertilizer, Desmett Ballestra, DNV, FGV Applied Technologies, Green Plant Organic Fertilizer, MLNG Group of Companies, PETRONAS, Sime Darby Plantation and Research and Synthomer, in categories awarding overall projects or teams.

Two individual awards will also be presented – Young Chemical Engineer in Industry and Young Chemical Engineer in Research. Finalists include three industrialists from PETRONAS, Jeremy Yong from Sarawak Shell Berhad, and students from University of Nottingham, Monash University Malaysia, and PETRONAS Research Sdn. Bhd.

The IChemE Malaysia Awards take place on 24 October 2016, at Le Meridien, Kuala Lumpur where the winners will be announced. The ceremony in Malaysia is just one of three international events organised by IChemE to celebrate chemical engineering achievements. Other events include the IChemE Singapore Awards (21 October 2016) and the IChemE Global Awards (3 November 2016).

Winners of the IChemE Malaysia Awards will be automatically shortlisted for the IChemE Global Awards, held in Manchester, UK, including the overall Award for Outstanding Achievement in Chemical and Process Engineering, which will be selected from all entries received worldwide.

IChemE’s director for South East Asia, Bakhtiar Talhah, said:

"In the 10 years that IChemE have had a presence in Malaysia, we have given chemical engineers in this country a voice, and a platform, to set global standards for the profession. Almost eighteen percent of IChemE’s membership is located in South East Asia, and this has been reflected by the volume of high quality entries we received this year.

"All who submitted projects for this year’s Awards should be incredibly proud of the great work they have done. I would like to thank the judges for their fair and detailed critique of each submission, and to our fantastic sponsors that recognise the importance of celebrating achievements in our profession – this event couldn’t happen without them.

"Congratulations to all the finalists, I’m looking forward to meeting them all at the ceremony in October.”
