The Economic and Engineering Realities of Net Zero

The Economic and Engineering Realities of Net Zero
  • Date From 22nd March 2023
  • Date To 22nd March 2023
  • Price From £10.00
  • Location Chester Hotel, Queens Road, Aberdeen, AB15 4YP.

Overview

The seminar will explore the realities in terms of cost, lifestyles, risks and opportunities as we move to net zero carbon. We intend to get beyond the frequently scientifically superficial public messaging to explore the realities and identify how engineers can contribute to the discussion and decisions.

The presenters are a group of eminent professionals who will provide the audience with insights into the implications of net zero policies in terms of both personal lifestyles and industry contexts.

Speakers

James McCallum, CEO, Xergy

"Net Zero Policy - Political rhetoric and the route to resolving the sometimes conflicting priorities of economic, social and environmental security."

Energy policy confusion erodes investor confidence. Net zero cannot be delivered unless there is long term clarity on policy which supports investment. This needs a collaborative effort between politicians and industry.

Brian Johnstone, Consultant, Carbon-Zero

"Decarbonising the Supply Chain"

Reviewing materials, transport, disposal and manufacturing steps. Life cycle considerations.

Tom Baxter, Independent Chemical Engineering Consultant, PDB

"Towards net zero - the wise use of hydrogen in the UK"

Hydrogen is ubiquitous in the scientific and general media. It is often described as a wonder fuel. Hydrogen properties and current hydrogen use will be discussed. The net zero/low carbon options for power generation, heat, transport and energy storage will be reviewed. Hydrogen will be compared with other net zero pathways and the evidence critiqued.

James Keachie, Head of Consultancy, Katoni

"Provision of Offshore Green Power"

Katoni Engineering, the winner of the NSTA’s Decarbonisation competition, has developed a concept which evaluates large scale electrification of the North Sea, without the requirement of power from shore.

Alex Johnstone, Energy Transition Lead, Ithaca

"Decarbonising Offshore Production Operations - how far can you get?"

Describing the options, economics and practicalities of decarbonising oil and gas installations.

Andy Robertson, Field Development Manager, Worley

"Emission Reduction Action Plans"

Optimising asset performance for a sustainable future.

Steve Aitken, Founder, Intelligent Plant

"Net Zero Domestic and Lifestyle Measures"

Real life experience relating to domestic battery installation, EV ownership, home energy efficiency, demand shifting and scaling.

Emily Eadington, Project Leader – BESS, Centrica Energy Assets

"Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) – Enabling Net Zero?"

By the end of 2025, the installed capacity of BESS in GB is expected to reach 6GW, from 2GW today, and could exceed other forms of storage (such as pumped hydro), making BESS the dominant storage technology. This talk will discuss the practicalities of commercial operation, along with the challenges of siting and building, BESS systems.
