Webinar: Methods and Technologies for Detecting Oil and Gas Methane Emissions
  • Date From 12th January 2021
  • Date To 12th January 2021
  • Price Free of charge, open to all.
  • Location Online: 12:00 GMT. Duration: 1 hour.

Overview

An overview of the methods and technologies used to detect and quantify methane emissions in the oil and gas value chain is given. Many technologies are available for detecting and quantifying emissions, as well as for monitoring emissions and reconciling emission inventories. A comparison of technologies, ranging from handheld point-source to satellites, is made comparing capabilities in detection limits and spatial resolution.

The accurate detection and quantification of emissions is crucial for implementing effective abatement strategies. However, other factors, such as cost as regulation, will have strong influences on how emissions are abated in terms of scale of abatement measures and whether measures are short or long term. An overview of abatement options and examples of strategies implemented by companies will be given.

Speaker

Jasmin Cooper, Sustainable Gas Institute

Jasmin Cooper graduated from the University of Manchester in 2013 with a first-class degree in Chemical Engineering with Environmental Technology. She then went on to do her PhD in life cycle sustainability and sustainable development at the University of Manchester, graduating in 2017. Her PhD research assessed the impacts of developing shale gas in the UK, and utilising it to generate electricity, to ascertain whether or not it is possible to develop it sustainably and if it could be a viable option for UK electricity (combining environmental, economic and social concerns and impacts).

Jasmin joined the Sustainable Gas Institute in 2018 and is involved in the Methane Environmental Programme. Her research interests include life cycle assessment, life cycle costing, social sustainable assessment, multi-criteria decision analysis and life cycle modelling.
