Recent events within the news, where drones paralysed Gatwick Airport for several days, have raised public awareness to the potential security and privacy issues related to the unregulated use of small unmanned aircraft. Drone platforms are employed for a wide range of purposes, from aerial surveys to public safety. However, with the increased availability and reduction in costs, they are now also a potential tool for criminals and terrorists.

In this evening seminar, Professor Murray will present an introduction to drones, what they are, how they operate, and consider the potential security risks that a drone might present to a process plant. He will be bringing along a number of drones and will be giving (indoor) demonstrations of their capabilities.

Presenter

Professor John Murray, Professor of Robotics and Autonomous Systems & Head of the Department of Computer Science and Technology

Professor John Murray was recently interviewed by the BBC during the events at Gatwick Airport. He has worked in the field of robotics for many years having gained his PhD in 2006 in Computational Neuroscience and Robotics. He has served as a reviewer of many conferences and journals for research, and participated in many validation panels for curriculum development.
